During my time in Sicily I learned that there were many ancient Greek settlements dating back to the 1st millennium BC. Selinunte was one of the most important Greek colonies in Sicily. These people would have been in contact with the Phoenicians and native Sicilians, though their city was eventually captured by Carthage. The archaeological remains are extensive including the Acropolis at the center with temples and fortifications as well as the necropolis with tomb monuments. In addition, there are several hills featuring ancient housing, sanctuaries, and other temples. At Agrigento, the city is renowned as the site of the ancient Greek city of Akragas. There, the Valley of the Temples or Valle dei Templi is one of the best examples of Greek art and architecture in the world. There are several large temples in Doric style including the Temple of Concordia, Temple of Juno, Temple of Heracles, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Temple of Castor and Pollux, Temple of Vulcan, and Temple of Asclepius. These sites are majestic to behold once you realize how vast the city must have been. Also, the horses of the city’s aristocrats were well-known because they usually were victorious at the Olympic Games. I hope you like these travel videos! Please come back to watch more of my journey.
